Licensed & NNLW removal

Following a thorough asbestos survey, you may need or require to have asbestos removed. Asbestos removal falls into two categories: notifiable and non-notifiable.

Notifiable Asbestos Removal

Notifiable asbestos removal involves the disturbance of Asbestos Containing Materials (ACMs) which have a high propensity to release asbestos fibre, fibres which are not tightly bound in the matrix of the material. Details of which can be found on page 17 of CAR2012.

This involves the removal of sprayed coating, Asbestos Insulating Board, pipe insulation loose insulation and significant quantities of asbestos debris. This list is not exhaustive, and the removal of other ACMs could constitute a notifiable removal. A 14-day notification to the HSE is required prior to work on site with preparation of method statements and risk assessments required if the HSE want to analyse documentation during this 14-day standstill period.

Non-Notifiable Asbestos Removal

Non-notifiable asbestos removal involves the disturbance of materials with a lower propensity to release asbestos fibre and asbestos fibre is held within a fixed matrix. This form of removal does not require a notification to the HSE, unless work falls in the Notifiable Non-Licensed Work Category. Please see the decision-making tool at the bottom of this piece to aid in your decision making.

Non-notifiable work is generally tasks which involve asbestos cement, gaskets, asbestos rope, textured coating, vinyl products and bitumen-based ACMs.

A bespoke removal service is crucial, as every building is different. Full PPE, RPE, H-Type vacuums access equipment, decontamination units, robust risk assessments and methods statements (RAMS) are required to remove asbestos. If a notifiable removal has taken place, then an analyst will have to attend site and undertake a 4 stage clearance. The analyst will carry out a visual inspection and air testing to deem the area safe to reoccupy. Certification will be produced and once the area is safe to reoccupy reinstatement or demolition can begin.

Encapsulation

Cheaper than a full removal, if the asbestos-containing materials aren’t damaged beyond repair, encapsulation can be a fantastic alternative. Using various materials such as resins and sheet metal cladding, asbestos can be sealed off and insulated to prevent damage. Warning labels are then applied to prevent accidental disturbance.

Importance of Asbestos Surveys & Removal Services

If you suspect asbestos may be present in your building you can commission an asbestos survey to determine if and where it may be. Following the survey, a report will be compiled detailing the type of asbestos present, its location, extent and condition. The report will also give recommendations for dealing with each incidence such as repair, encapsulation or removal. The report can subsequently be used for compiling an Asbestos Management Plan enabling duty holders to comply with their obligations under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 (Reg 4 , Duty to Manage)
