PROJECT: Contaminated Soil and Asbestos Removal in Basement Boiler Room (December 2024 – January 2025)
In December 2024, we took on a job to remove contaminated soil and rubble from a basement boiler room in Yeovil, Somerset. This was a challenging task, but it was important to ensure the area was safe for use again. We took all necessary steps to handle the hazardous materials carefully and professionally.
What We Did:
- Creating Safe Access: The first step was to create a safe way into the basement from the ground floor. This allowed us to work without disturbing the rest of the building.
- Removing Contaminated Waste: We bagged all the contaminated soil and rubble to make sure no harmful materials spread beyond the work area.
- Asbestos Removal: The boiler area had asbestos insulation, which we carefully removed using a special method called wrap & cut. For the boiler itself, we used The SAFESTRIP Controlled Wetting System, which helps remove asbestos without releasing dangerous fibres into the air.
- Environmental Clean: After all the contaminated materials were removed, we cleaned the entire area to make sure it was completely free of harmful substances. This was followed by an independent 4-stage air test to confirm the space was safe.
Safety First:
This job was considered a confined space entry, meaning we took extra precautions. Here’s what we did to keep our team safe:
- Rescue Equipment: We had rescue equipment on-site in case of emergencies.
- Breathing Protection: Our team wore breathing apparatus to avoid inhaling any harmful particles.
We take safety very seriously, so all of our work was carried out according to the highest standards and regulations.
