Is There Likely To be Asbestos Present In My New Home?
The truth is that until 1999, when the country’s then-Labour government outlawed their usage, a significant amount of asbestos-containing materials, or ACMS, were utilised in the construction of homes in the UK. In fact, according to certain statistics, asbestos is present in roughly seventy percent (70%) of British residential dwellings. According to other statistics, this potentially fatal chemical is present in about half of all UK residences.
It has historically been a popular building material due to its advantages as an insulator and fire-resistant material as well as its strength, affordability, and resistance to chemicals, water, and electricity.
Although these materials are harmless if left alone, if disturbed or broken, the expelled fibres pose a serious threat to human health. The chemical can cause two cancer types, mesothelioma (a rare but aggressive disease affecting the lining of the lung) and the almost invariably fatal asbestos-related lung cancer, in addition to significant lung illnesses including asbestosis.
Furthermore, asbestos fibres could be easily dispersed by a burst pipe that damages a ceiling or construction project with the majority of insurance policies only covering asbestos removal as part of a claim for damage; they do not pay out just because this material is found.
